Just up the highway, Key Largo is known to scuba enthusiasts as “the dive capital of the world,” it’s hard to resist diving and snorkeling in the crystal waters as you explore the the worlds first underwater park. The Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park protects the only living coral reef in the continental United States and is home to the underwater statue, Christ of the Abyss. Divers can explore several shipwrecks, and even have pizza delivered to your room in the Jules Undersea Lodge.
Key West Festivals
Head the opposite direction to Key West and you’ll discover a vibrant festival atmosphere year round. The Goombay Festival in Key West’s historic Bahama Village showcases island arts, crafts, music, and food (Oct 17-18). Fantasy Fest is a “10-day adult-themed party in paradise” held Oct. 17th - 26th, in Key West. It has grown from a small party in 1988 to a wild extravaganza of costumes and floats to rival Mardi Gras.
