February was another very busy month at Big Tree RV Resort. There is so much going on here! The happy round of activities included dances, shows and potlucks, as well as pancake breakfasts, spaghetti dinners and trips to Broadway Palms in Fort Myers for dinner and shows.
We started with our annual yard sale and luncheon on the first Saturday. As Floridians love a good yard sale, the park was packed with cars, walkers and bikes. People in the community enjoyed checking out everyone’s good stuff they had for sale.
Memorial Balloon Release
A Memorial Balloon Release has become a tradition at our park on the Sunday following the Valentine’s Day Dance. Red and pink heart-shaped balloons are purchased for $1.00 by residents who would like to release them in memory of deceased loved ones. The 5th annual event was held on February 12, when 140 balloons were released into the brilliant blue sky. It was an amazing sight to see.
The balloons are all biodegradable, and we remove the ribbons before the balloons are let go. These are our efforts to protect wildlife.
Our residents put on their annual state dinners in February and March. The Midwest Dinner was well attended with a house filled with snowbirds who hail from that part of the country. We also hold annual dinners for residents of Michigan and the South.
Our first Chili Cook-Off was a huge success. We had 17 participants who entered one of the contest’s two categories -- Best Regular Chili and Best Unique or Hot Chili. The proceeds from this event, totaling almost $500, is being donated to the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.

In addition to all the above, the Arcadia Community Band entertained us on February 15, and the Suncoast Community Bloodmobile was here on February 22. As you can see, there is never a dull moment at our RV park near Zolfo Springs, Florida.
