Rainbow Village RV Resort is a little over an hour’s drive from Tarpon Springs, a Greek town that offers authentic cuisine of the old country along with sponge docks and beautiful historic buildings. It makes a great destination for a day trip.
This seaside community has the largest percentage of Greek Americans of any city in the county. The culture is very much alive, and you can still hear Greek spoken in the streets. Truly, the town is a unique gem in the state of Florida.
Your first stop when visiting the area should be Dodecanese Boulevard, which has docked sponge boats and unusual shops in addition to Greek restaurants and bakeries. It’s a lovely place for a stroll or session of people watching. You can also take a boat tour to see how sponges were harvested in ages past. After exploring the dock, go to Tarpon Avenue downtown, where you can find a large variety of antique shops.
Built in 1943, the St Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral is modeled after St. Sofia's in Constantinople. The sculptured Greek marble, stained glass and ornamentation make the church a good example of New Byzantine architecture.
